Sentence Scramble

A simple game for building sentences

Sometimes the best way to practise sentence writing is to move the words around.

In Sentence Scramble, your child gets a small set of word cards and puts them in an order that makes sense. Once they have built the sentence, ask them how they worked it out. Did the capital letter help? What does the full stop tell them? Does the sentence sound right when they read it aloud?

The game takes about 10 minutes. Start with a short sentence, then try a longer one. For an extra challenge, ask your child to add a describing word or a phrase that tells you when or where something happened. A silly sentence is welcome, as long as it makes sense.

I’ve put together six printable sets of word cards, along with instructions and an answer key. Print them, cut them out and keep each set together so you can play again.
